Overview

When Disney announced it was entering the cruise market in the late 1990s, there was scepticism in some quarters that the product would be tacky. This proved unfounded, and the on-board experience is incredibly slick and magical.

The Disney theme is everywhere – Mickey Mouse’s ears are on the funnel, the ship’s whistle plays “When You Wish Upon A Star”, all the favourite Disney characters are on board and there is artwork all around the ship from Disney films.

Unsurprisingly, the ship is very family-orientated, for example, the cabins have a separate toilet and bathroom, and there is an excellent kids’ club. An added attraction is Castaway Cay, Disney’s magical, private island.

However, prices are higher than rival cruise lines because you are paying for the Disney name.
Disney Magic operates seven-night Caribbean cruises, and most of the passengers are American.

Staff are friendly, but service could be better.

Suitability

Suitable for Disney fans of all ages, although there are obviously a higher number of screaming kids than on most other cruise ships.

There is plenty to do for kids, and a surprisingly large amount of options for parents, particularly at night. Safety of kids on board is paramount, and parents are given bleeper systems so they can keep in touch while their children are in the kids’ club.

There are 80 family cabins and 12 that are suitable for wheelchair users.

Hints & Tips

Tips are not included. 15% is added to drinks bills.

You can book your kids to eat with Disney characters. You can buy drinks packages to stock in-cabin fridges (not in all cabins).

Parents can book a massage at Castaway Cay. Parents can escape from it all in the adult-only restaurant, Palo (cover charge applies).

There are three launderettes.
