Overview

As with other Holland America ships, Volendam has a traditional, less glitzy feel than some rivals, and appeals mainly to American passengers.

There have been some recent enhancement under the name Signature of Excellence, which includes fully-stocked mini bars, more flexible dining options and fruit in cabins.

Staff are friendly, although service is not as slick as on other lines. However, this is being addressed under the Signature of Excellence programme, which promises a greater attention to service.

Suitability

The ship suits older, American passengers. For older women travelling alone, there are the traditional gentlemen host dance partners on board.

Not recommended for families.

Recent developments have included more flexible dining options, making the cruise less regimented.
