Overview

A mass-market cruise, tailored to British tastes, Island Cruises was originally launched to cater for a younger (35-45 years) age group. However, it attracts customers of all ages who want a low-cost cruise experience with few frills.

Another big attraction is that it is possible to fly out of regional airports with tour operator First Choice, which part-owns the cruise line. If you want a cheap and cheerful cruise, you can’t really go wrong, but bear in mind that although the holiday price is low, money is clawed back on-board any which way the company can.

Almost everything – from bridge visits to safety deposit keys – costs extra, there is a lot of upselling of drinks in bars and lots of enticements to spend in on-board shops.

The food is surprisingly good for the price, and service is adequate and much improved over the past couple of years.

Suitability

Suitable for passengers of all ages who want a low-cost cruise with few frills. Popular with families too.

In the summer, the ship is based in the Mediterranean and is completely full of UK passengers. However, bear in mind that, in the winter, the ship moves to Brazil where most passengers are local, creating a very different on-board atmosphere.

Hints & Tips

Bridge visits can be booked coming in and leaving port, for a fee (price includes champagne and canapés)

You can buy a Wipe Out Lottery ticket for £5. If it is drawn out of the hat, your on-board account is wiped out.

In-cabin items like safety deposit boxes and hairdryers cost extra.
