Originally built as a five-star yacht, this ship is newer and more upmarket than Clipper Adventurer, and therefore more expensive. It specialises in adventure travel, cruising mainly in the South Pacific and Australasia.

Although geared to the American market, Princess’ British connection with P&O means that the ambience is slightly less Americanised than on other lines. There are no butlers in the top suites, unlike on some rival ships.
There is an open-air cinema, Movies under the Stars.

Sister ship to Grand Princess and Star Princess, this is one of the biggest ships in the fleet.
Although there are lots of American passengers, the British connection with P&O means that the ambience is slightly less Americanised than on other lines.

A popular ship with Celebrity regulars, it is elegantly decorated and classy. The foyer has marbled floor, and elsewhere the ship is furnished with wood panelling. Art lovers will be impressed, as Mercury has a $3.5 million art collection on board.

Sister-ship to Norwegian Dawn, this is one of the best options for people who hate formal, regimented cruises and who get tired of eating in the same place each day. The ship has a laid-back atmosphere, with lots of options.

Sister ship to Noordam, Zuiderdam and Westerdam, this is one of the newest ships in the fleet (built in 2003) and aimed at a (slightly) younger audience.
Holland America Line is an upmarket cruise line, with many traditional touches, and catering mainly for the US market.

One of the line’s Vision-class ships, Rhapsody of the Seas has floor-to-ceiling windows, a seven-storey atrium and retractable glass roof over the pool area.
There are fewer cabins with balconies than on some of the newer, bigger ships in the fleet. Service is friendly.

Ryndam is almost identical to Maasdam, Statendam and Veendam and operates year-round in the Caribbean. It has some interesting décor, themed around Dutch worldwide exploration, with artwork and artefacts from the past 300 years.

Sister ship to Grand Princess and Golden Princess, Star Princess has a spacious feel and has a bigger children’s area.

There is a more spacious feel on this ship, as it carries fewer passengers than some others of a similar size. Almost identical to Ryndam, Maasdam and Veendam, offering the same, traditional cruise experience that is aimed at the American market.

The on-board ambience is less regimented, as with other Princess ships, and there is the same, excellent choice of alternative dining options. There are listening chairs in the library.
Service is good, although passengers are not escorted to cabins on arrival.

One of the newest ships in the fleet, a sister ship to Oosterdam, Noordam and Zuiderdam, Westerdam is aimed at a (slightly) younger audience.
Its children’s facilities are an improvement on other ships in a bid to attract the family market.
