Despite the Dutch names given to all Holland America Line ships, most of the passengers are American. The line offers a traditional cruise experience that is more upmarket than rivals such as Royal Caribbean International, but less so than the premium-product ships.

Nicely decorated in muted colours, the ship is stylish, not loud and brash. There are more cabins with balconies on this ship than any others in the fleet.

The ship has an informal atmosphere and is particularly geared to the British market. There are no inside cabins, so prices are slightly higher than other ships in the fleet. Service is friendly and efficient, as typical of all P&O ships, with Asian and British crew and staff.

Smaller than other ships in the fleet, there are still plenty of options, including several alternative dining restaurants (for which there is an extra charge). There are no butlers in the top suites, unlike on some rival ships.

Uncrowned, stylish and comfortable, Crystal Symphony offers an upmarket experience on a mid-size ship, carrying 1,000 passengers. Most passengers are American. Food is varied and of a high standard. Service is excellent and there are no on-board announcements.

Launched in spring 2006 in a blaze of publicity, Freedom of the Seas is the world’s biggest cruise ship, capable of carrying a staggering 3,600 passengers. There’s so much to do that the ship really is a destination in its own right.

Sister ship to Coral Princess, this was the first ship in the fleet to introduce ScholarShip@Sea, which allows passengers to sign up to study courses in, for example, photography or cooking. There is a charge for the courses. There is an on-board flower shop.

One of Royal Caribbean’s Radiance family of ships, this is a mid-sized ship (only 2,000 passengers, compared to 3,000 on some of the line’s other ships).

A popular ship with Celebrity regulars, it is elegantly decorated and classy. The foyer has marbled floor, and elsewhere the ship is furnished with wood panelling. Art lovers will be impressed, as Mercury has a $3.5 million art collection on board.

Sister-ship to Norwegian Dawn, this is one of the best options for people who hate formal, regimented cruises and who get tired of eating in the same place each day. The ship has a laid-back atmosphere, with lots of options.

Designed specifically with NCL’s Freestyle concept in mind, there are lots of places to eat, the dining rooms are open later and, unlike other cruise lines, passengers are not rushed into leaving the table.

Less elegant than Princess ships (and some would say, with less atmosphere) this is nevertheless a good value four-star product. Since it entered the P&O fleet, this ship has had its dining areas expanded, to cater for the British market.

Sister ship to Noordam, Zuiderdam and Westerdam, this is one of the newest ships in the fleet (built in 2003) and aimed at a (slightly) younger audience. Holland America Line is an upmarket cruise line, with many traditional touches, and catering mainly for the US market.

As with other Holland America ships, the majority of passengers are American and the ship has a traditional, less glitzy feel than some rivals. There is a greater emphasis on learning something new with an interesting guest speaker programme.

Ryndam is almost identical to Maasdam, Statendam and Veendam and operates year-round in the Caribbean. It has some interesting décor, themed around Dutch worldwide exploration, with artwork and artefacts from the past 300 years.

Seabourn guarantees a luxurious cruise on board a small ship that delivers an intimate experience. Seabourn Legend is the newest of the line’s three ships (though still over 10 years old) and generally regarded as of a slightly higher standard.

Upmarket and excellent quality, this cruise line is more expensive than others, but is worth the extra money. Seven Seas Mariner is bigger than the other ships in the fleet, and has a wider variety of things to do.

Silver Shadow is newer than Silver Cloud and Silver Wind and holds about 100 more passengers. It is an elegant and spacious ship, offering gourmet cuisine, and with no annoying on-board announcements and no hard-sell that often occurs on some of the more mass-market ships.

Sister ship to Grand Princess and Golden Princess, Star Princess has a spacious feel and has a bigger children’s area. Although there are lots of American passengers, the British connection with P&O means that the ambience is slightly less Americanised than on other lines.

One of the line’s Vision-class ships, Vision of the Seas has floor-to-ceiling windows, a seven-storey atrium and retractable glass roof over the pool area. There are fewer cabins with balconies than on some of the newer, bigger ships in the fleet.

One of the newest ships in the fleet, a sister ship to Oosterdam, Noordam and Zuiderdam, Westerdam is aimed at a (slightly) younger audience. Its children’s facilities are an improvement on other ships in a bid to attract the family market.

A lovely looking ship, with sails that are utilised when the winds allow, the on-board experience is casual and comfortable, although the ship is not particularly spacious. There are no formal nights and passengers can sit where they like for meals.
