Balmoral is Fred Olsen Cruise Lines’ fifth ship. The vessel was previously called Norwegian Crown and acquired by Olsen from Norwegian Cruise Line in 2007.

This is Princess Cruises' newest ship, launched in summer 2006, and a sister ship to Caribbean Princess, although not identical. The ship holds over 3,000 passengers, and has been cleverly designed so as not to feel too crowded.

Uncrowned, stylish and comfortable, Crystal Symphony offers an upmarket experience on a mid-size ship, carrying 1,000 passengers. Most passengers are American. Food is varied and of a high standard. Service is excellent and there are no on-board announcements.

Explorer of the SeasExplorer of the Seas, Royal Caribbean International (Passenger/crew ratio: 2.6)
One of five Voyager-class ships in the fleet, this is a big ship, carrying over 3,000 passengers, with a huge shopping mall and adventure activities such as ice-skating and rock climbing. There are even party parades throughout the main street.

Popular with the US and UK market, the ship is relaxed and informal, with a huge choice of places to eat and lots of children’s options. The ship has remote wireless access. The shows have had good feedback for their variety – from Bollywood to West End shows.

Built nearly 15 years ago, this ship was stretched – chopped in half and had an extra bit adding in the middle – in 1998 to add 250 extra cabins, more entertainment areas and a conference centre.

Norwegian Gem is the latest NCL ship to offer Freestyle Cruising – a shorthand way to describe the line’s own-brand casual cruising. There are no dress codes – jeans are even allowed in the dining rooms – or fixed times to eat.

Previously Star Cruises’ SuperStar Leo, the ship joined NCL in 2004. It has a huge outside children’s area and an impressive atrium lobby. As with other ships in the fleet, there is an excellent range of cuisine to suit all tastes.

Previously the Cunard Caronia, this classic-looking ship was built in 1973. It underwent a $17-million refit before becoming Saga’s second ship in 2005. Again, it offers some interesting and unusual itineraries. The European and Filipino staff are friendly and helpful.

Formerly a P&O ship, this is the first Princess ship to sail out of the UK (operating Mediterranean and Scandinavian cruises out of Southampton during the summer). It’s the only ex-UK ship to have an outdoor cinema, Movies Under The Stars, and to offer weddings at sea.

Upmarket and excellent quality, this cruise line is more expensive than others, but is worth the extra money. Seven Seas Mariner is bigger than the other ships in the fleet, and has a wider variety of things to do.

This cruise line is more expensive than others, but is worth the extra money as the product is excellent quality. Most of the 500 passengers on board this ship are American, although it does appeal to other nationalities.
