Overview

Italy meets US kitsch on the Costa Serena, which is themed around astrology and the heavens and was designed by the same architect who dreams up the glitzy décor on sister company Carnival Cruise Line’s ships.

People either love it or hate it, likewise the on-board ambience, which is very European (for which read noisy and casual) on account of the large numbers of Italians who cruise with Costa, along with Germans, Spanish and French.

With so many nationalities to cater for – there are also Brits - announcements are made in at least four languages, which is intrusive, and entertainment is conservative so as to have multi-cultural appeal.

Special features on Costa Serena include the large two-deck Samsara Spa and dedicated spa cabins, a Formula 1 racing car simulator and giant slide on the top deck.

Suitability

Costa Serena is for families and young couples who like the more laid-back European lifestyle and want a lively cruise with the accent on fun rather than formality.

The Squok Club looks after children aged three to 11, with a Mini Club for the three to six-year-olds and Maxi Club for the seven to 11s. There’s a separate teen club for older kids, split into the Teen Junior club for the 12-14s and Teen Club for the 15-17s.

Hints & Tips

A per person service charge is added to all cruise accounts. This is a mandatory payment and cannot be removed. It replaces gratuities so an additional tip is not expected.

There are usually two formal nights on a seven-night cruise, but don’t be surprised to see many passengers getting by with smart casual.

Dinner in the Club Bacco speciality restaurant can be pre-booked on line. There is a moderate additional charge to dine there.
