Nordnorge

Overview

Nordnorge is one of Norwegian Coastal Voyage’s midsize ships, operating six, seven and 11-day itineraries out of Bergen in the summer. For over 100 years, NCV has provided a vital lifeline to isolated areas on the Norwegian Coast, delivering supplies and ferrying passengers and cars. More recently, the ships have been adapted to carry cruise passengers, providing a unique voyage through some of the most beautiful landscapes.
The ship has a mixture of traditional cruise passengers and those who are using the vessel as a form of transportation from one point to another. Therefore, the makeup of passengers can change from day to day.
There is no formal entertainment on board. As the cruise company itself says: “Mother Nature provides the entertainment.”
Most cabins have private bath with shower, but some have washbasin only.
In the winter, Nordnorge operates wildlife expedition cruises in Chilean and Argentinean Patagonia, down to Cape Horn and Antarctica.
Meals are included in the price. Breakfast and lunch is generally a buffet, while dinner is served at designated tables, and there is also a 24-hour café (extra charge).

Suitability

Nature lovers who are independent and who would hate the idea of being on a loud, brash, modern superliner would love this experience.
There are few families on board.
Don’t expect the huge selection of food options of mainstream cruises. At dinner, there is one option and many of the dishes are Norwegian, so this cruise would not suit anyone who is not an adventurous eater. Special diets can be catered for with advanced warning.
For passengers in wheelchairs, Nordnarge is the best option, as it has three wheelchair-accessible cabins.

Hints & Tips

The ship operates a no tipping policy.
Alcohol is expensive, but it is possible to bring your own on board.
Bring your own toiletries, such as shampoo etc, as they are not supplied.
Pack layers, a waterproof jacket and walking boots.
Don’t get caught out: in some places, the ship stops only long enough to pick up or unload, while others give you time to go ashore. This is a remote part of the world, so you don’t want to get left behind!
A popular excursion is to the mountain overlooking Tromso, to see the midnight sun.
Passengers who have sailed with Norwegian Coastal Voyages, suggest staying over in Bergen for a few days before or after. Others suggest taking the scenic train from Bergen to Oslo.
There are discounts on some sailings for OAPs and group bookings.
