Overview

Sister ship Freedom of the Seas made headlines all over the world when she was launched in 2006, a mega-ship capable of carrying 3,600 passengers.

Liberty of the Seas is a mirror image – a floating resort with acres of space and innovative attractions, including a rock-climbing wall, ice-skating rink and family water park. Even those who hate the idea of big ships can’t fail to be impressed with the sheer scale of the vessel and its facilities.

This is the second of Royal Caribbean’s three Freedom-class ships, dubbed “the largest cruise ships in the world”. For 2008, Liberty of the Seas will be sailing seven-night Western and Eastern Caribbean cruises from Miami.

Special features include a FlowRider surf park, water park with waterfalls, fountains and a lazy river and whirlpools that overhang the side of the ship by 12 feet, 112 feet above the sea.

Suitability

This is unashamedly American cruising, great both for families - because of the Adventure Ocean kids’ club - and couples of all ages. Expect a lively on-board atmosphere, non-stop entertainment and music and games around the pool by day.

Most passengers are American, with a fair few Brits who like the US style of cruising and a handful of other nationalities.

Hints & Tips

Unless you have booked a shore excursion, wait for the rush to subside before disembarking at the ports of call. That way you avoid a busy breakfast and queues to get off.

At Labadee, Royal Caribbean’s private island, grab a sunlounger and float mat on the beach with a view of the ship and wait for the last boat back. Saves standing in line in the hot sun.

Envelopes are left in cabins at the end of the cruise for passengers to tip staff. Alternatively, gratuities can be added to the shipboard account or pre-paid, in which case a voucher will be attached to the envelope.

Speciality restaurants fill up fast so book early, but it’s also always worth joining a waitlist as people often book on the off chance they’ll want a table and cancel on the day.

There is one formal evening on each seven-night cruise so pack accordingly.
